Examples of Bribery

Bribery does not have to involve cash or an actual payment exchanging hands and can take many forms such as a gift, lavish treatment during a business trip or tickets to an event.

Basic Examples of Bribery:
– Bribery in order to secure or keep a contract.
– Bribery to secure an order.
– Bribery to gain any advantage over a competitor.
– Bribery of a local, national or foreign official to secure a contract.
– Bribery to turn a blind eye to a health safety issue or poor performance or substitution of materials or false labour charges.
– Bribery to falsify an inspection report or obtain a certificate.

Example in Financial Services

The offer of a promotion in return for not reporting a health and safety issue would be a bribe.

Illegal gratuity
Something of value that a person gives offers or promises for the purpose of influencing the action of an official in the discharge of his or her public or legal duties.

Kickback
One common form of bribery is a “kickback” – an unearned reward following favourable treatment.Facilitation payment
Small bribes, commonly termed ‘facilitation payments’,  are payments to induce officials to perform routine functions they are otherwise obligated to perform, are bribes.
An example would be where a government official is paid to perform, or speed up something, they already have to do. It might be called a number of different terms. Small bribes are given various names depending on context and country; for example, ‘tea money’ in Kenya.
